The Yamuna River in Delhi reached the danger mark on Wednesday, causing concern among officials and leading to the evacuation of people from the floodplains to shelter homes. The danger mark of the Yamuna at Delhi’s Old Railway Bridge is recorded at 205.33m, and on Wednesday, the river levels rose to 205.74m by 1 p.m., breaching the danger mark.

The Gautam Budh Nagar administration, located in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, promptly alerted the residents and facilitated the shifting of people displaced from the floodplains to shelter homes. Officials in Gautam Budh Nagar reported that the Yamuna levels at Okhla Barrage in Noida remained below the danger level, providing some relief to the area.

According to BK Singh, executive engineer at the Agra Canal-Okhla division of the irrigation department, the danger level of the Yamuna at Okhla Barrage is 200.60m. On Wednesday, the river remained steady at 199 metres at 5 p.m. Similarly, at the Hindon barrage in Ghaziabad, the Hindon River was recorded at 199.05m, which is below the danger mark of 205.80m. However, Singh noted that the Hindon River had risen by 1 metre in the past 24 hours.

While the water levels in Gautam Budh Nagar were relatively stable, the administration remained on high alert due to the increased levels of the Yamuna in Delhi. Additional district magistrate Atul Kumar emphasised the importance of caution and warned residents in flood-prone areas to collect their belongings and move to safer locations. Although the Yamuna and Hindon levels were below the danger mark in Gautam Budh Nagar, the administration anticipated a possible further rise in water levels and advised residents to exercise caution.

Kumar assured the public that the administration was providing relief and facilities to the displaced individuals at shelter homes. Currently, approximately 4,210 people have been displaced by the floods and are accommodated in 14 shelter homes in safer areas. The administration is committed to supporting these individuals by providing them with essential supplies, including food, shelter, and sanitation facilities. Authorities stressed that people should not attempt to move household goods without proper coordination with the police and the administration, as it could pose further risks.

The recent rise in water levels of the Yamuna River in Delhi, followed by breaches of the danger mark, has raised concerns among officials. In response, the Gautam Budh Nagar administration has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the affected areas. Furthermore, they have employed machines to pump out stagnant water, ensuring that residents face no further problems once they return to their homes.

Looking ahead, the administration plans to conduct a comprehensive damage survey to assess the impact of the floods on the region. Around 67 villages in the district, mainly consisting of agricultural land, have been affected by the floods in the Yamuna and Hindon floodplains. To gather accurate information about the extent of the damage, subdivisional magistrates in Dadri, Jewar, and Sadar will conduct surveys in their respective areas. These surveys will form the basis of a comprehensive report that will help determine the compensation to be provided to the affected individuals.
