A project that was unfinished for four decades was completed in four years
Prime Minister Modi tweeted on Monday that the project which has not been completed 40 years was completed in just four years.

Vajpayee was nominated by Jan Sangh in the general election of 1957 and won three seats. He was 4th in Mathura and 2nd in Lucknow. After winning from Barrampuru, he became the first indigenous people to be elected to Lok Sabha. During the 1962, he tried to run for Lok Sabha from Barrampuru and Lucknow, but lost both. Barrampuru was the place where I tried my luck for the second time in 1967.

According to an official PMO statement, the Saryu Canal project was launched in 1978, but due to budgetary support, inter-departmental coordination, and lack of continuity of proper monitoring, the project slipped through cracks and was unsuccessful after nearly four years. The canal is made in such a way that despite decades of use, it remains perfect.

“The Prime Minister’s vision for the well-being and empowerment of farmers and his commitment to prioritize nationally important long-standing national projects paid great attention to this project,” said the Prime Minister’s Office.

The project was therefore brought under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana in 2016 to complete within a specific period.

Despite costs overrunning, the Saryu Nahar National Project was completed by the end of 2014 at a cost of more than Rs 9,800 crore, over 4,600 crore of which was provided in the last four years.

The salient features of the Saryu Nahar National Project of Balrampur

  • Among the project’s components is the interlinking of five rivers, Ghaghara, Saryu, Rapti, Banganga, and Rohini, to ensure optimum use of water resources in the area.
  • Six thousand kilometres of sub canals have been connected to the main canal of 318 kilometres.
  • In the coming years, over 14 lakh hectares of land will receive better irrigation, and more than 29 lakh farmers from more than 6,200 villages will profit from the project, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
  • It is expected that the farmers of eastern UP, who suffered the most from the inordinate delay in the canal project, will benefit from the upgraded irrigation capacity and be able to grow crops on a large scale, thus maximising agri-potential in the region.
  • According to the Uttar Pradesh Government, the canal will not only support agriculture in eastern Uttar Pradesh, but will also play an important role in the BJP government’s mission to double farmers’ incomes by 2022.
  • Besides preventing recurrent flooding, the canal system is also expected to protect districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

As a result of the farmers’ unions calling off their year-long agitation against the now-repealed farm laws, protesting farmers will be returning to their villages from the Delhi border when the Prime Minister inaugurates the Saryu Nahar National Project at Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

 Canal Project

According to BJP leaders who spoke to the Hindustan Times, the inauguration shows that local workers are confident in the government. He added that officials were mobilized to make the event a success.

The Uttar Pradesh government under YogiAdityanath has launched a large-scale campaign not only on social media, but also in rural areas east of UP, calling this initiative a great success for the party’s twin governments at the state and national levels.

LIVE UPDATES ON THE STORY:

  • Vajpayee had found Balrampur to be a fertile hunting ground. He was a candidate of the Jan Sangh in the 1957 general elections, contesting three seats. Among the results were fourth place in Mathura (fourth place) and second place in Lucknow (second place). He won a by-election from Balrampur to become the first candidate from Balrampur elected to the Lok Sabha. Despite running from Balrampur and Lucknow in 1962, he lost both elections. From Balrampur, he tried his luck once again in 1967 and won. Sukhdev Prasad, a former MLA and Vajpayee’s colleague, said the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been a matter of “good fortune for us”.
  • On Saturday, at Ikhatar ka ilaka, the prime minister will hold a public meeting. Atal Ji considered Ikhatar ka ilaka to be the citadel of his rule. It was quite common for him to sit in this area for hours on end,” Prasad said.

  • Prasad recalled his relationship with the late Prime Minister and was concerned about the farmers’ problems because irrigation was a major concern. Many farmers should benefit from the Sarayu Canal Project. “
