Prime Minister’s 1st Rupees 20,000 crores project in J&K

On his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since Article 370 was repealed by the government in 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced projects worth 20,000 crores on Sunday. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister was welcomed warmly in the Palli village where he addressed an event marking National Panchayati Raj Day.

The visit occurred amid heightened security in Jammu & Kashmir as the union territory was the scene of two terrorist attacks in the space of 48 hours. The bus – which had CISF personnel aboard – was attacked on the streets of Sunjwan, Jammu. In addition to the serviceman, two Jaish terrorists were killed. The terrorists were struck at Kulgam in Kulgam Valley on Saturday afternoon.

A blast occurred in an agriculture field some kilometres away from the venue mere hours before he arrived in the Palli hamlet, raising concerns. Nevertheless, the police suspect that the explosion was the result of a lightning strike or meteorite.

Sunday will see the launch of several new development projects. In a move to rejuvenate 75 water bodies across the country, the J&K project line-up includes ‘Amrit Sarovar’, which is part of the initiative to develop 75 water bodies in every district. As the PM’s office noted, “the government is committed to bringing about wide-ranging reforms to substantially improve governance and ease of living for the people of the region at an unprecedented pace in the aftermath of the constitutional reforms announced in August” (a reference to the repeal of Article 370 and the establishment of a union territory).

A road tunnel between Banihal and Qazigund, built at an estimated cost of over *3,100 crores, is another important J&K project. As a result, the road length between Banihal and Qazigund will be shortened by 16 km, and the travel time should be cut by about one and a half hours.

Besides the expressway, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Roads are also aimed at improving connectivity. The expressways are costing more than Rupees 7,500 crores.

In J&K, PM Modi announced a new industrial development scheme. So far, there have been just 15 billion rupees worth of investment since independence, now we’re proposing to increase that figure to 52,000 trillion rupees while 38 billion rupees worth of projects will be inaugurated by the prime minister. “We anticipate investments crossing the 70,000 crore mark in Jammu and Kashmir,” the Lieutenant Governor of the state, Manoj Sinha, said.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was making his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since Article 370 was abrogated, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over ₹20,000 crores.

Also included in this was the opening of the Banihal-Qazigund road tunnel, which would provide access to both union territory regions at any time of the year.

 

Prime Minister also held the Panchayat Raj Diwas celebration at Palli Gram Panchayat in Samba.

“Today was the launch and establishment of a  project of Rs 200 billion, which will provide new impetus for the development of Jammu and Kashmir.”

 He said it was a great day to accelerate the development of the area. “I commend the people of Jammu and Kashmir for that.” “38,000 yen of private investment has been received in J&K in two years, compared with 17,000 in the past seven decades,” the prime minister said.

 The Prime Minister inaugurated the BanihalQazigund road tunnel to establish an all-weather connection between the Jammu and Kashmir regions of the Union Territory.

 The 8.45-kilometre tunnel will reduce the road distance between Banihal and Qazigund by 16 kilometres and reduce travel time by about an hour and a half, officials said.

 The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for three sets of roads of the Delhi AmritsarKatra Expressway under construction at a cost of more than 7,500 and also launched the ‘Amrit Sarovar’ initiative to develop and regenerate 75 bodies of water in each county of the country.

 One of the power projects he laid the groundwork for on Sunday was first authorized by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2013.

 Among other projects, Modi also laid the groundwork for the Rattle and Rattle hydropower projects. Kwar, an 850 MW facility will be built on the Chenab River. in Kishtwar at a cost of about 5,300 crores and a 540 MW Kwar hydroelectric project built on the same river at a cost of more than 4,500 crores.

The Prime Minister has set up 100 centers to further expand the Jan Aushadi Kendras network in Jammu and Kashmir and provide high quality generics at affordable prices. These centres were located in remote corners of the Union territory.

 PM also gave the map “SVAMITVA” (Village Surveying and Mapping with Improved Technology in Village Areas) to the program beneficiaries. The tokens will provide villagers with documentary proof of ownership of their properties so they can use them for financial gain if needed.

 It also transferred prize money worth ₹44.70 crores to the bank accounts of 322 award-winning Panchayats in 31 states/UT of the country, winners in different categories.

 Prizes range from ₹5 lakh to ₹50 lakh.
