Jagdeep Dhankar elected as the 14th Vice President of India

National Democratic Alliance candidate and former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar are sworn in as the 14th Vice President. He won 528  out of 710 valid votes in the Saturday 14th vice-presidential election held in Congress.  Opposition candidate and parliamentary leader Margaret Alva won 182 votes. By supporting Jagdeep Dhankhar “directly or indirectly,” Alba said some opposition parties and their leaders had undermined their credibility.

  Lok Sabha General Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh Election Commissioner told reporters that out of his 780 electoral votes, which consist of elected and nominated members of  Rajya Sabha and elected members of  Lok Sabha, 725 Said he voted for MP. “The overall turnout was 92.94%,” Singh said. Voting started at 10 am and closed at 5 pm. The count began at 6 pm. We finished around 7:45 pm.

 Of the 725 votes, 15 were invalid and the total number of valid votes was 710, of which he accounted for 97.93% of the total votes cast. Opposition parties expected nearly 200 votes as various opposition parties voiced their support.

Of his 36 members of the Trinamool Congress, only two of them went to the polls. Opposition parties had announced they would boycott the election because Alba’s candidacy had not been consulted before it was announced.

BJP president  Nadda congratulated the newly elected vice president. The Speaker of Congress, Sonia Gandhi, sent Mr Dhankhar a letter of congratulations. Senior Assembly Speaker Rahul Gandhi congratulated Mr Dhankhar and said Mr Alba represented the spirit of united opposition with grace and dignity.

 Senior MP  Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh said he would join the Trinamool parliament and said it was unfortunate that he did not endorse Mr Alva. “India will have to wait for its first female vice president,” he said, drawing on the wit and objectivity of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and the wit and humour of Venkaiah Naidu,  two BJP leaders who have become vice presidents.

CPI(M) Executive Director Sitaram Yethury said Mr Alba articulated and addressed all the issues that stir India’s democracy today. “The legislature is threatened by an intimidating executive. She has put up a hard fight. Answers to questions she has asked are still pending,” he said.

Former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar became India’s new vice-president after defeating opposition candidate Margaret Alba by 346 votes.

  1. Jat Jagdeep Dhankhar was born in 1951 to a peasant family in Kitana, a small village in Rajasthan.
  2. Mr Dhankhar started as a lawyer and practised in the High Court and the High Court of Rajasthan. In 1990, one year into active politics, he was appointed Senior Advocate.
  3. He was closely associated with former Deputy Prime Minister of India Chaudhary Devi Lal and when he left Vice President Singh’s government in 1990 to become Coalition Minister in a minority government led by Chandra Shekhar, followed his mentor.
  4. When PV Narasimha Rao became prime minister, he joined parliament. However, with the rise of Ashok Gerot in Rajasthan, he switched to BJP.
  5. Mr Dhankhar was appointed Governor of West Bengal in July 2019. During his tenure, he clashed regularly with Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee.

 On Saturday (6 August 2022), former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected as the 16th Vice President of India.

NDA candidate Dhankhar received a total of 528 first-choice votes, while opposition candidate Margaret Alva received 182 votes, according to the Electoral Commission. Giving his first reaction after the defeat to Dhankhar, Alva said that although the vice presidency was over, “the struggle to uphold the  constitution, strengthen democracy and restore the dignity of parliament continues.”

 On her official Twitter account, Dhankhar congratulated her on her election as vice president and thanked all opposition leaders and parliamentarians from all parties who voted for her in this election.

“It was an opportunity for the opposition to come together, set the past aside, and build trust among themselves during this election. We have chosen to endorse, directly or indirectly,” said Margaret Alva. “I am sure these political parties and their leaders have damaged their credibility,” added the 5-year-old lawmaker.  Who is India’s new Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar?

 Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951, to a village farmer in the Junjunu district of Rajasthan. He has extensive administrative experience and has been active in public for over 30 years. He was educated at Sainik School in Chittorgarh with a degree in Physics. He also holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Rajasthan.

 This 71-year-old man is one of the state’s leading lawyers and has practice experience in both the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court of India.

 Dhankhar entered the public eye after being elected MP of  Jhunjhunu in his Lok Sabha election in 1989 with the ticket of Janata Dal. As Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990, he also served as Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Nations. He initially adapted his policies from the policies of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal.  A member of the Jat congregation, Dhankhar later turned his attention to national affairs and was elected to the Rajasthan State Legislature in 1993 from the Kishangarh constituency in Ajmer district. He was also appointed Governor of West Bengal in 2019.
