Khalid Jamil is a name not unknown to any Indian household. Khalid, after taking Aizawl FC to the I-League title in 2017, has now started representing Northeast United and is working hard to bring it into action. When the Indian Super League was initiated in the year 2014, famous names like Zico, Marco Materazzi, and David James were part of the competition as coaches.

The ISL had its own rules and regulations. And, only the football coaches with a professional license were allowed to supervise the players.


Many years have passed by and the gameplay has changed. The coach clubs have also evolved in these years. And in the previous year, it was declared that Indian coaches with a pro license can take part in the competition and provide guidance to the players.
While Indian Super League was carving its own story, there was a coach who was walking in his path and making a name for himself. He initiated the critical task of keeping Mumbai FC – a team in the I-league after the tight budget.

He took Mumbai in the I-league for six years in a row and later, he also took the authority of the Aizawl FC and promoted them from the I-League team to the I-league champions in 2017. And now, he is working for Northeast United to bring it back into force.

Khalid Jamil’s Early Life:

Khalid Jamil was born on 21 July 1977 in Kuwait City. he is currently 44 years old. Even though he was born in Kuwait City, he was raised by Indian parents. Khalid Jamil attended an under 14 camp when he was staying in Kuwait. He met Michael Platini who was France’s national football team’s coach. Platini later became an inspiration for him.


Khalid Jamil’s Career:


Khalid Jamil has first debuted in the industry as a football player. He started his professional career representing Mahindra United during the National Football League that was organized in the year 1997-98. However, he did not play during the season and left the team to secure a position in Air India FC in the year 1998.

Later in the subsequent year, Jamil made his professional appearance with the team and got an offer to join a football club from Brunei. However, he rejected the proposal which he still regrets for.


He later joined Mahindra United in the year 2002. But he hardly represented the team during the matches as he was mostly injured. This was also the main reason for his early retirement from his career as a football player.

After some years, Khalid Jamil joined Mumbai FC. But, he did not participate in a single game for two years and ultimately announced his retirement from the team.


As for his National career, Khalid Jamil represented India in a national level tournament and made his debut in the year 2001. He played a total of 11 matches while representing the nation.


Khalid Jamil retired from his playing career and started as a football manager from the club Mumbai F.C where he represented the I-league in 2009 for the last time. After he managed the club during the 2009-2010 season, Jamil lead Mumbai FC and came out in 11th position out of 14 which was pretty good despite the fact that the team was provided limited resources for participating in the game.


During the 2010-11 season, Mumbai has outcrossed the expectations of the mass and secured a position of 7 out of 14. This has gained Khalid Jamil colossal appreciation. Later, in the 2014-15 season. Mumbai FC secured the rank of 6th.


Consequently, in the year 2016-17, Khalid Jamil had taken over the job of Aizawl who was brought back to the competition for their excellent display of attack while playing football. They were reinstated on public demand for the Federation Cup after the Goan Clubs withdrew from the tournament.

In the same game, Aizawl became the league Champions under Khalid Jamil. This has created history for Aizawl as it became the first club from the Northeast to win the Indian Super League.


After joining Aizawl, Khalid has also managed East Bengal as a head coach during the 2017-18 season. He secured a deal of 1.25 crore INR that made him to the list of highest-paid football coaches in India.


After the tremendous impact Jamil had made for the teams that he has managed, he had joined Northeast FC as the Head of the academy and assistant Coach. He joined the club on a three-year deal.

Later, Gerald Rus was removed from his position and Khalid Jamil became the interim coach. NEUFC defeated the champions Mumbai FC and ATK Mohun Bagan in the last season of ISL. Both these clubs were coached by foreign professionals and included versatile foreign players as well as Indian internationals. However, Mohun Bagan gained victory over the team by two goals.

This season, Jamil has taken responsibility for Northeast FC. Looking at his talents, it can be safely concluded that he would gain victory for the club he is coaching for. Though the victories may not be as sweet as the ones like Aizawl, this will also be counted as an incredible achievement.
