Beijing to have Olympics again.

In the year 2008, Beijing got the opportunity to hold the summer Olympics, and after that Beijing will be seen hosting the winter Olympics in the upcoming year 2022, by doing this Beijing will become the first city ever in the history of the Olympics to host both summer and winter games. 

The Beijing Winter Olympics is just two months away, and the Olympics has now become the target of a diplomatic boycott by the United States, and few others are likely to join them.

If we talk about the diplomatic boycott, it all started when China’s Embassy situated in Washington called the United States move as political manipulation, after no invitations were sent to the United States politicians firstly.

So the White House declared that the United States will not send any government officials to the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022. Meanwhile, the diplomatic boycott will not have any effect on the participation of the athletes from the United States and they will have full support from the US, they will receive support from their families and luck will be wished for them. 

One thing that, still becomes a question that, How Beijing will hold the winter Olympics so soon after the summer Olympics in the year 2008 and also by doing this, Beijing will create the history of the first city ever to host both summer and winter Olympics.

As we see, the answer is not very complicated, the cities which have the potential in Europe are six in the number and all of them were dropped out of the bidding process on the account of the doping scandal that took place during the winter Olympics in the year 2014 at Sochi, Russia.

Also, the wide advertised price tag of $ 51 billion for Sochi frightened away future bidders. So when it got down in the year 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during the meeting, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had only two options remaining with them, and that was Almaty in Kazakhstan and Beijing in China. 

Beijing won the Olympic bid with a very narrow difference of 44 and 40. It holds a very long list of rejections from cities across Europe, on that Stockholm and Oslo are the two high profile cities that chose to pull their names out during the Olympic bidding process for the year 2022.

Later they were joined by Ukraine, Karkow, Poland, and Lviv, all of them chose to withdraw their bids from the bidding process. Munich from Germany and St. Moritz from Switzerland, two of the other potential strong bidders were rejected by the public during the voter referendums.

As you can not ignore that the International Olympic Committee has its headquarters in Switzerland. 

Stockholm and Oslo were the two favorable cities by the International Olympic Committee, as they tried to return the Olympics to the traditional European winter places but, both of them pulled their bids out due to the politics and cost.

The bid for the Winter Olympics is always tough, as the number of candidates is already very limited due to geography. So for the final round, IOC came down to two venues, and which do not require any public voting and had constraints on spending, Almaty, and Beijing, during the Summer Olympics in the year 2008, Beijing spent more than $ 40 billion.

While pitching the bid, Almaty said 79% supported the bid, and Beijing said that 94.8% in China were in favor. Almaty came with the pitch and reminded that it is surrounded by mountains and natural snow and that was a disadvantage for Beijing as it does not have any history about the winter sports tradition and also has very less natural snow in the areas that were picked for the skiing.

Meanwhile, some of the members from IOC and Beijing counter-attacked by saying that the skiers mostly prefer to ski in artificial snow, and also the International Olympic Committee saw Beijing as a good winter sports business opportunity. 

So Beijing won the bid by four votes, and the President of the International Olympic Committee said that it was a very safe choice and they have faith in China that they will stand by their promise.

During the bidding process, it was very shocking for the IOC, to be left out only with two options that too not from the favorable venues, and this is the reason that IOC does not go through a long bid process to pick the host cities for the Olympics.

It was very embarrassing for the International Olympic Committee to say that why the voters have turned down from holding the Olympics and especially the winter Olympics games. Scandals were also a part of the bid process, even during the bidding process for the Salt Lake Winter Games held in the year 2002 was hit by Scandals. 

For a better and safer biding, more than 100 members no longer vote in the process of choosing the venues for the Olympics and are chosen by the leadership headed by Bach. The venue for the Olympics until 2032 has already been chosen by the International Olympic Committee.

In the upcoming year 2024, the Olympics will be held in Paris, 2026 Olympics in Milan – Cortina in Italy, 2028 in Los Angeles, and 2032 in Brisbane, and for now, the only open slot is for the Winter Olympics for the year 2030, and for that Sapporo from Japan seems to be a leading candidate.
