Virat Kohli Stepped Down From Indian Test Captainship

Captain Virat Kohli stepped down from his position as captain of the Indian Test team with immediate effect following India’s seven-wicket loss to South Africa in Cape Town, which ended the Test series 2-1.

In early 2015, Virat Kohli became the full-time Test captain after MS Dhoni announced his retirement in Australia, and has mainly maintained this position since then.

A recent saga between Kohli and the BCCI culminated in his resignation from the T20I team before the 2021 World Cup, which led to the BCCI’s sudden announcement. Kohli was stripped of the ODI captaincy by the BCCI early in December, and Rohit Sharma was named the new white-ball captain. After Virat Kohli stepped down as T20I captain, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly claimed that he had asked him not to.

Kohli immediately contradicted Ganguly, saying that his decision to step down has been  ” received well ” , dubbed  ” progressive ”  by the BCCI top brass, and that he has not been asked to reconsider the decision.

Kohli also expressed his disappointment in a press conference, saying he had been informed that he was no longer captain of the ODI team one-and-a-half hours before the meeting to select the Test squad for South Africa, and  ” there had been no communication ahead of the meeting ” .

In the aftermath of Kohli’s departure from T20I leadership, Sharma remarked at the time while announcing the ODI squad for the South Africa tour on December 31 that  ” everyone in the meeting urged him to reconsider ”  his decision to name Sharma captain of the team.

” I have done my best to take the team in the right direction over the last 7 years with honest and uncompromising efforts every day. I have done my duty honestly and I have left nothing out. ” . Kohli tweeted on Saturday to apologise for his departure as Test captain. “

There is a point at which everything must come to a halt, and for me, it is now. There have been many ups and also some downs to this journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or belief.

I have always believed in giving every bit of myself, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to our team. “

” I would like to thank the BCCI for allowing me to lead my country for such a long time, and I would also like to thank all of my teammates who, from the very beginning, believed in my vision for the team and never gave up in any circumstance.

Those who believe in my vision have made this journey so memorable and rewarding. I am grateful to Ravi Bhai and his support team who have put this vision into action and moved us upward in Test Cricket consistently.

I am indebted to you for all your hard work and dedication. Last but not least, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for believing in me as a captain and finding me to be an able individual who could lead Indian Cricket into the future. “

Kohli was largely successful during his time as Test captain, as he led the team to its highest ranking in ICC rankings and numerous memorable overseas triumphs. His performances led India to the semifinals of the inaugural World Test Championship, held in Southampton in 2021.

Overall, with 40 wins from 68 games, he leaves the position with the fourth-most victories in Test cricket. The other 28 games ended in draws and losses, with 11 ties and 17 losses.

He was India’s best captain by a considerable margin, based on numbers. The second and third highest-ranked players are Dhoni (27 wins from 60 matches) and Ganguly (21 wins from 49 matches).

The next Test assignment for India is a two-match series against Sri Lanka at home in February-March, at which time Kohli will play his 100th Test.

Captain Virat Kohli stepped down from his position as India’s Test captain on Saturday. Kohli announced on his social media accounts. Indian coach Virender Sehwag announced his decision after India lost the three-match Test series against South Africa 1-2.  ”

With seven years of relentless dedication and hard work under my belt to guide the Indian Test team in the right direction, it is time for me to step down as captain. My best effort has been put into this, and I will not let anything go to waste. Everything must culminate at some point, and for me now is that time. ”

His tenure ended with a record of 40 victories in 64 matches, making him the most successful Indian Test captain in history.

Kohli thanked the BCCI and his teammates in his final message of thanks to those who supported him throughout his time as captain of India.

The fact that Kohli was subsequently replaced by Rohit Sharma as India’s white-ball captain in December of last year should be noted. Following India’s failure to qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup in November, the Indian T20I captain stepped down from the position. In the aftermath of these events, Kohli was removed as captain of the team before they arrived in South Africa for the ODI series.

Since taking over as captain in 2012, Kohli has led India to victories in every home series, with the last triumph coming against New Zealand in December 2021. The Indian cricketer won a series in Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and Australia, in addition to winning a series in Sri Lanka.

As of this writing, he holds a 2-1 advantage in a series against England. The game earlier this year was postponed due to an outbreak of Covid-19 and will be rescheduled later this year.

Kohli has failed to win both series he has captained in South Africa and has also lost the series he commanded in England and New Zealand. As a result of his leadership, his team reached the inaugural World Test Championship final, where it lost to New Zealand in a one-off match at Southampton last year.

According to the prolific right-hander, he has always given  ” 120 per cent ”  when it comes to everything he does on the cricket field.

Kohli explained that there had been numerous ups and downs along the way, but he has never lacked conviction or effort. Kohli will always give 120 per cent to everything he does, and if he is incapable of doing that, he knows it is the wrong decision. I believe in being honest with my team, and I cannot fail them, ”  Kohli said.

In 2015, Kohli took over the position of Test captain when MS Dhoni stepped down midway through the series against Australia.
