The economic crisis in Sri Lanka caused violence, and the president declared a national emergency. But what is at the root of the crisis? How did the country come here? Who is supporting Sri Lanka?

The economic crisis of the island nation allowed Sri Lanka and India to deepen their relationship.

The arrival of Sri Lankan refugees in Rameswaram last week only underscores the serious economic crisis that is taking place in the island nation. This is the first time refugees have arrived on the coast of Tamil Nadu since the end of the 30-year civil war in 2009.

Those who landed in Rameswaram said they were forced to flee the country due to a lack of food and labour in towns and villages. Due to a shortage of newspapers, newspapers were discontinued and food inflation surged.

Reports have pointed out a harsh scenario in which the Rajapaksa government has been forced to place security guards on gasoline pumps to control fuel distribution. If things get worse, India can anticipate an influx of economic refugees.

They were economic migrants trying to escape the dire situation of Sri Lanka suffering from a serious economic crisis.  Indian intelligence believes that the number of these refugees is likely to increase as unemployment and soaring inflation desperately drive more and more people in the coming days and weeks.

Natural destination, Tamil Nadu

Only 30 km beyond the shallow Palk Strait, India seemed to be within reach, especially for Tamils in northern and eastern Sri Lanka. Due to their ethnicity, Tamil Nadu was attractive as an exile or as a transit point to the west, mostly Europe.

Here, during decades of war and political turmoil, large and influential Tamil diasporas gathered in Sri Lanka. Tamil Nadu people and political parties have traditionally welcomed Sri Lankan refugees with similar ethnic and cultural roots.

In the 1970s and 1980s, India trained and armed  Tamil rebels, and crossing the sea did not pose a major threat to illegal immigrants from Sri Lanka. This state of affairs modified substantially after Rajiv Gandhi became assassinated through the LTTE in 1991.
