In a tragic incident on Thursday morning, a 25-year-old man lost his life in a hit-and-run accident involving an unknown vehicle on the Delhi-Meerut Motorway (DME) stretch near Masuri. The victim, identified as Gaurav Singh, was riding a bike with his friend while returning from their Kanwar pilgrimage in Haridwar.
Meanwhile, in another unfortunate incident, the previous night in Ghaziabad‘s Loni area, a Kanwar pilgrim named Gaurav Singh was electrocuted, and eight others sustained injuries when their ‘Dak Kanwar’ truck came in contact with a high-tension electricity wire. The police received information about the incident around 10:30 p.m. and promptly rushed the injured individuals to two different hospitals in Ghaziabad.
During the Kanwar season, many pilgrims utilise trucks, mini trucks, and other commercial vehicles as part of their ‘Dak Kanwar’ for the return journey. On this particular night, one of the trucks equipped with a large music system was being prepared to go to Haridwar from Loni. Unfortunately, while the truck driver was manoeuvring to avoid a passing vehicle, the top of the music system came into contact with the electricity cables, resulting in nine people suffering an electric shock. Tragically, one person died on the spot, while the remaining eight injured individuals were rushed to hospitals in Mohan Nagar and Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad.
Jaivir Singh, a resident who witnessed the incident, mentioned that the vehicle the truck tried to evade was carrying LPG cylinders. He further explained that two other vehicles carrying pilgrims had already left Loni, and this truck was the last one to depart.
Rajneesh Kumar Upadhyaya, ACP (Loni), stated that an additional police force was deployed in Loni to maintain law and order following the electrocution incident. However, despite repeated requests, neither the injured individuals nor the victim’s family have lodged a police complaint so far.

The victims were Kanwarias, devotees returning from their pilgrimage to Haridwar. Unfortunately, their journey took a devastating turn when their motorcycle was struck by an unidentified vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving behind a grievously injured Mohit and tragically claiming the life of Ram Vir.
Naresh Kumar, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Masuri, provided some details about the incident. He stated that the collision occurred while Ram Vir and Mohit were riding their bikes on the DME. The exact circumstances leading to the accident are still under investigation. The ACP mentioned that the police had reviewed the CCTV footage of the area where the accident took place.
However, they discovered that the footage only began recording at around 8:40 a.m., which was after the accident had already occurred. The earlier part of the incident was not captured on camera. The footage revealed a crowd gathered at the accident site, further indicating that the incident had already transpired when the CCTV system started recording.
Following the accident, the police promptly arranged for the body of Ram Vir (Kanwar Yatri) to be sent for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Simultaneously, the police informed the family of the deceased about the tragic incident. They are now awaiting a formal police complaint from the family, which will enable them to proceed with the necessary legal procedures.
