Jamia Millia Islamia: Disruptions are antithetical to democratic principles, says Dhankhar.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, while addressing the centenary year convocation of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) at Vigyan Bhawan, emphasised the fundamental principles of democracy and criticised the recent disruptions in Parliament by opposition parties. He highlighted that democracy is built on the pillars of dialogue, discussion, deliberation, and debate, aimed at securing the public good. However, disturbances and disruptions within the legislative body are antithetical to democratic values as they hinder the essential processes of accountability, transparency, and good governance.

The Vice President expressed his concern over the weaponization of disruptions in Parliament, suggesting that such tactics were being strategically employed to tarnish the sanctity of the democratic institution. He lamented that disruptions have become a common occurrence, hampering the smooth functioning of the temple of democracy, which should ideally be operational 24×7 to serve the interests of the people.

During the convocation, approximately 12,500 students, including gold medallists from the years 2019 and 2020, were awarded degrees and diplomas. The ceremony was chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, with Vice President Dhankhar as the chief guest.

The Vice President emphasized the significance of the Question Hour in Parliament, which plays a critical role in holding the government accountable and promoting transparency in governance. He stated that disruptions during parliamentary sessions invariably lead to the suspension of Question Hour, impeding the government’s obligation to respond to crucial inquiries. Dhankhar highlighted that this practice undermines democratic values and the principles of good governance.

His remarks on democracy came in the backdrop of recent chaos in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, where the Opposition demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the issue of violence in Manipur. As a result of the disruptions, both Houses were adjourned.

Vice President Dhankhar commended the graduating students of Jamia Millia Islamia, calling them the “warriors of 2047,” implying that they would shape India’s future as it approaches its 100 years of Independence. He urged the youth to empower themselves through capacity building and personality development, fostering a healthy environment and society. Dhankhar expressed confidence that with the commitment, direction, and dedication of the young generation, India would emerge as one of the top three developed nations by 2047.

During the convocation, meritorious students were honoured with gold medals, and the Vice President encouraged them to become innovators and entrepreneurs, establishing their start-ups.
