Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Refuses To Take Padma Bhushan 2022

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former governor of West Bengal, said he did not know he had been nominated for  Padma Bhushan and would reject him if so, an extremely rare instance when a civilian honoree dismisses one of India. highest civilian title because it would be an embarrassment to the government.

In a short statement in Bengali posted on the Bengali social networking sites of his party, CPM, he said: “I am not aware of such a thing. If the government chose to give me ( price), I will refuse.” Union Home Secretary spoke to Mr Bhattacharjee’s wife today about the award, the Central Government reported. An official said she accepted the award and thanked the Home Office, explaining the wrong.

Also a vocal critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, the 77-year-old has long suffered from age-related illnesses as well as heart and lung problems and has barely appeared before the public.

It is very rare for a Padma Bhushan award recipient to be turned down. Recipients must confirm their acceptance before notification is made.

In 2015, Salim Khan announced that he refused to accept  Padma Shri. Before Romila Thapar, historian Romila Thapar rejected Padma Bhushan in 2005, after she returned the 1974 award in 1984 in response to the Indian army’s siege of the Golden Temple.

Also in 1984, the same problem prompted Khushwant Singh to return the Padma Bhushan he had received in 1974, but he received the Padma Vibhushan in 2007 and a Padma award that year. The other candidate is former National Assembly leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, a member of a dissident group within the party that questions its leadership.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who defended the Gandhi family amid the discord,  shot Mr Azad and praised Mr Bhattacharjee, tweeting “This is the right thing to do. He wants to be Azad (independent). ), not Ghulam (slave).”

Currently, Bhattacharya is bedridden due to a serious illness. Historically, he has been a hardliner and has repeatedly opposed the Modi government. In the Communist Party of India, he is a member of the highest political body. He has always spoken out against the saffron camp.

Meanwhile, a  Home Office official told News18 that Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla contacted Bhattacharya’s wife today to inform him about his Padma Bhushan. She gets Bhalla’s call and gets notified. Government sources said his wife’s statement did not indicate that he did not want the award.

It has also been reported that the Standard of Practice for the Padma Bhushan Award deals only with notifying recipients and not obtaining their consent. There have been instances in the past where names have been cut off the list when a proposed recipient refused to accept a phone call. However, in this case, there was no indication that the client was refusing to accept the award.

According to a tweet from the CPIM, the party’s policy has consistently been to decline such awards from states. They added that it is the party’s job to serve the public, not to accept awards for their work.

CPIM’s Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Bhattacharya told News18 earlier that the allegations are bogus. According to my knowledge, he will not accept this award.”

Since his health is failing, 77yearold politician has mostly been absent from the public eye. During his administration as Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr Bhattacharjee served from 2000 to 2011.

The controversy surrounding veteran CPI(M) leader and former Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee seems to have no end in sight. During a recent interview with Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, Left Front’s Rajya Sabha MP, he asked why if the Modi government were just, why did it give Padma Vibhushan to Kalyan Singh and Padma Bhushan to Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee?

Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, the leftwing MP from the Left Front, said: “If the Modi government is just, why does it give Padma Vibhushan to Kalyan Singh and Padma Bhushan to Budhhadeb Bhattacharjee? Both are ministers. This clearly shows that those who divide the country along the lines of the community are often preferred by the government. “The Babri Masjid occurred during the tenure of Kalyan Singh

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former Chief Minister of Bengal, refused to accept the Padma Bhushan award on January 25.

The recipient, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said in a statement: “I don’t know anything about this award. No one told me about that. If it has been decided to offer me the Padma Bhushan, I refuse to accept it.”

Those close to the CPI(M) report that he and the party came to the decision together. On Twitter, the party wrote: “Com. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, who was nominated for a Padma Bhushan award, has declined to accept it. CPI(M) policy has consistently rejected such awards from the state. We work for the people, not for awards. Com. EMS, who was originally offered an award, had declined it.”

It was announced on the eve of Republic Day that the Padma Awards 2022 would take place in 2022.

Following the recent decisions of the Centre, CDS General Bipin Rawat has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan (posthumously), while Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has been awarded the Padma Bhushan.
