Delhi University‘s undergraduate admission process for the current academic year concluded with an impressive surge in applications, reaching a total of 245,239 students vying for a spot at the esteemed institution. This marked a considerable increase from the 217,653 applications received last year, representing a notable 12.7% rise. University officials attributed this growth to the larger number of students appearing in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which DU has been utilising to determine admissions for the past two years.
During the second phase of the admission process, students were allowed to apply to multiple colleges through DU’s Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal, leading to multiple applications from the same individuals to various colleges. Kirori Mal College emerged as the most sought-after college, with a staggering 161,533 applicants expressing their interest in the institution.
Hindu College followed closely with 158,548 applications, while Hansraj College and Ramjas College received 157,162 and 156,068 applications, respectively. Other popular colleges included Sri Venkateswara College, Dyal Singh College, and Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College.
DU now faces the task of evaluating how many of the applicants will secure a coveted spot among the university’s 71,000 available seats. Last year, the university admitted only 65,000 students. To determine the candidates’ chances of admission, the administration will assign simulated ranks, which represent tentative positions that determine the college allocation based on the student’s chosen preferences, programme-specific merit scores, and seat availability.

Surprisingly, prestigious DU colleges like Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), and Miranda House did not feature among the top 10 most preferred colleges. This can be attributed to the limited number of courses or subject combinations offered by these colleges. Additionally, LSR and Miranda House being women’s colleges might have influenced some applicants’ choices.
Anju Srivastava, the principal of Hindu College, expressed delight at the high number of applicants to her college. She credited the diverse range of courses offered by the institution, catering to students from various streams of Humanities, Commerce, and Science.
The majority of applicants, approximately 80.93%, are from schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This indicates the widespread recognition and preference for CBSE schools among the student community.
Delhi witnessed the highest number of applicants, with a staggering total of 88,036 applications. This highlights the enduring appeal of Delhi University as a premier institution of higher education in India. It is followed by 55,685 applicants from Uttar Pradesh and 23,442 applicants from Haryana.
