A 24-year-old pilot from Kolkata rescued more than 800 students

Mahasweta Chakraborty, a 24-year-old pilot from Kolkata, has recently shot into the spotlight on social media after tweets from the Bhartiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Mahila Morcha. Mahasweta Chakraborty has flown over 800 students from Ukraine to India amid the ongoing Ukrainian-Russian conflict, according to her tweets.

The BJP Mahila Morcha tweeted on Monday, “Mahasweta Chakraborty, a 24-year-old pilot from Kolkata, saved more than 800 Indian students who had been looking for asylum at the border of Ukraine, Poland, and Hungary. I offer her my respects,” something she did not say.

As well as saying the 24-year-old was her mother’s daughter, Priyanka Sharma, vice president of the BJP Yuva Morcha, tweeted that she was the daughter of the BJP Mahila Morcha chief of Bengal. Specifically, her tweet reads: “She is Mahasweta Chakraborty, daughter of Tanuja Chakraborty (President of West Bengal State BJP Mahila Morcha) (sic).

During the past three years, almost 20,000 stranded citizens from India have been rescued by more than 80 special evacuation flights. In addition to rescuing Bangladeshi and Nepalese citizens, India has also rescued citizens from its neighbouring countries through its Operation Ganga.

In this operation, buses and trains transported Indians from eastern Ukraine to western Ukraine, and then those Indians were flown back to India via locations such as Bucharest, Budapest, Suceava, and Warsaw.

It was through Poland that over 600 students who had been evacuated from Sumy were brought back to India.

A military operation launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24 responded to the call for assistance from Donetsk and Luhansk in response to the aggressive actions of Russian troops in Ukraine. However, the Russian Defense Ministry had already announced that the operation was aimed only at Ukraine’s military infrastructure.

It is quite right that a 24-year-old pilot from Kolkata’s New Town is all over the Internet, as she rescued over 800 Indian students who were stranded in Ukraine’s Polish and Hungarian borders and brought them home safely.

A member of ‘Operation Ganga,’ Mahasweta Chakraborty led six evacuation flights – four from Poland and two from Hungary – between February 27 and March 7 to rescue stranded students during the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

In describing the 24-year-old’s experience, he said it was “a once in a lifetime opportunity”

Chakraborty told The Times Of India in an interview that rescuing those students in their late teens and early twenties, many of whom had fallen ill and had stories of traumatizing survival, was an experience he will never forget.

“I work hard to accomplish their goal,” she said. ” As a result of my contributions to their journey home, I am extremely proud.”

At midnight, Chantraborty received a phone call from her airline telling her that she was selected to fly the aircraft during the rescue mission. My packing and leaving took approximately two hours. My team of two-and-a-half pilots and I travelled to Istanbul, 2.5 hours from Poland, to receive instructions regarding the rescue operation.

India also utilized other airlines, such as SpiceJet and IndiGo, in its efforts to obtain Indians stranded offshore during Operation Ganga, during which more than 75 flights were operated to get Indians back home.

Indra Chakraborty has been an IndiGo employee for the last four years, and she is very proud to have been a part of the company. Taking 800 Indian students back to safety from Ukraine, the country that has been ravaged by violence, death, and destruction since Russia invaded the country two weeks ago, she flew them back to safety.

In the Times of India, Chakraborty described the rescue of those students in their late teens and early twenties who were sick and had traumatizing stories of survival as the experience of his life. The courage they displayed on their way home and the part I played in their journey back home make me extremely proud.

As part of Operation Ganga, other airlines had also participated in evacuating Indian nationals from the former Soviet Republic, including IndiGo and SpiceJet. Indian authorities operated more than 75 flights to get back stranded citizens to their homeland.

The first stages of the Coronavirus pandemic were also part of Chakraborty’s involvement in a Vande Bharat mission.

Pune-based Sushma had flown in oxygen machine contractors and delivered vaccines to Kolkata and other cities.
