Who was Sindhu Moosewala?

 Sidhu Moosewala, an actor, lyricist, and rapper who had legions of fans, was shot to death near Jawaharke village in Mansa district on Sunday evening. A look at his background, career, and the controversy that surrounded him.

As Sidhu Moosewala, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu hails from a farmer’s family from the village of Moosa in Mansa. The 28-year-old electrical engineer graduated in 2016 from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in Ludhiana, but went to Canada, where his first song was released in early 2017.

Moosewala’s father, Balkaur Singh, is a farmer and retired government employee, while his mother, Charan Kaur, is the village sarpanch. During the December 2018 election, she won by a margin of 600 votes.

 

After graduating, Moosewala moved to Canada and released his first song, ‘G Wagon’. He gained popularity in 2018 after releasing ‘So High’. PBX1 ranked 66th on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart. The chart-topping single ’47’ was released in the United Kingdom.nited Kingdom.

Bambiha Bole reached the top 5 on the global YouTube music charts. Moosetape tracks were released in 2021 and also gained global popularity. The artist performed live in many countries abroad, including India.

Later, Moosewala launched his own record label, 5911 records. Most of the music he produced was inspired by the Jat Sikh community.

 

He has also appeared in a few Punjabi movies, including ‘Yes, I am a Student’, ‘Teri Meri Jodi’, and ‘Gunah’. In October 2021, he starred in the movie ‘Moosa Jatt’, which did not do well commercially.

In March 2022, he released his movie ‘Jattan da Mundan Gaun Lagya’. Moosewala courted controversy for promoting gun culture through his music. 

 Two videos featuring Moosewala went viral in May 2020. One video featured five cops and showed Moosewala training with an AK-47, while another featured him wearing a personal pistol.

On May 19, six police officers were suspended. Police in Barnala also booked the singer under the Arms Act since the incident took place there.  

He was granted regular bail in July 2020 and later joined investigations. He was even fined for wearing black tinted glasses in Nabha in June of that year.

In July 2020, Moosewala released a song called ‘Sanju’ in which he declared that FIRs lodged against him were badges of honour.

He was once again in controversy in December 2020 over his song ‘Panjab’ in which he glorified Khalistan separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale.

Moosewala had released a song named, ‘Gwacheya Gurbaksh’ during the first Covid wave in March 2020, mocking Gurbaksh Singh, who came from Italy to Punjab and became Punjab’s first Covid death and a ‘super spreader’. A Covid victim was criticized for taunting him.

Following his loss in the recent Assembly election in Mansa, he released a song, ‘Scapegoat’, in which he derided voters as traitors. The AAP retaliated by accusing him of insulting the voters.

During the month of September, 2019, he faced criticism for inappropriately referring to ‘Mai Bhago’ (a legendary Sikh woman who led 40 Sikh soldiers in battle against the Mughals) in his song. In March 2020, he even appeared before the Akal Takht for the matter and apologized for the mistake on social media.

On September 25, 2020, when the farmers called for a Bharat Bandh, Sidhu Moosewala became the first Punjabi singer to come out in support of farmers during their agitation against three farm laws.

Punjab was the only part of the country where the stir had a significant impact at the time. Mansa was one of the districts that participated in the bandh. His unwavering support for the protest was later backed by several Punjabi singers.

He had appealed to people to stay inside during the first wave of lockdown.

Punjab saw banners carrying his picture and an appeal to people to observe ‘self-lockdown’.

 

 In order to enforce the lockdown, he set up ‘thikri pehras (night watch by the community)’ in his own village, Moosa.

Later, these nakas were seen throughout the state in association with the then SSP, Dr Narendra Bhargav. During the lockdown, Moosewala was also one of the first to distribute rations and other items of daily necessity to people.  

Moosewala joined the Congress in the run up to the Punjab Assembly elections and ran unsuccessfully from Mansa. Vijay Singla of the AAP defeated him by 63,323. In the past, his family was a supporter of Congress as well, according to his close aides.

Her election as a Congress sarpanch paved the way for her son to join the same party. His recent criticism was directed at the AAP government and Vijay Singla, who was sacked as minister for corruption. 

Legendary singer KK crosses the bridge to heaven

Singer-composer KK, real name Krishnakumar Kunnath, died on Tuesday in Kolkata at the age of 53. He was in town for a two-day concert when he became ill during an event at Nazrul Mancha. “He was brought dead to the hospital around 10 p.m.,” a CMRI hospital staff member said. He died of what appeared to be a heart attack.

KK felt ill during the concert, according to sources. He complained of discomfort during the interval, but he finished the event.

He was then taken to a five-star hotel on the Esplanade, where his health deteriorated and he died before reaching the hospital. Gurudas College was responsible for organising the concert. The singer was in town for two days.

His wife and two children survive him. West Bengal Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Arup Biswas, who rushed to the hospital after KK died, told IANS that the body had been sent for a post-mortem examination.

“His relatives have been notified.” “They are expected to arrive in Kolkata early Wednesday morning,” he said.

People from all walks of life paid tribute to him as soon as word of his death spread. “Saddened by the untimely death of noted singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

His songs reflected a wide range of emotions and touched people of all ages. We will remember him forever through his songs. Our hearts go out to his family and fans. “Shanti Om.”

KK’s death was described as a “huge loss” by actor Akshay Kumar. “Extremely sad and shocked to learn of KK’s sad demise,” he wrote on Twitter. What a pity! “Om Shanti.” Babul Supriyo, a singer-politician, tweeted,

His untimely death is heartbreaking and a huge loss for Indian music. He has left an indelible imprint on the minds of countless music fans with his gifted voice. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and fans. “Shanti Shanti, Om Shanti Shanti.”

With his first album, “Pal,” KK rose to prominence among music fans. Tadap Tadap (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam), Dus Bahane (Dus), Tune Maari Entriyaan (Gunday), “Gori Gori” (Main Hoon Na), “Tu Jo Mila” (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai (Woh Lamhe), and many others are among his chartbusters. KK song is available in a variety of languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Malayalam.
