Google launched its Pixel devices on the 19th of October with tensor. And with the launch of Pixel 6, we could see a new revolution in the android smartphone market. Google has launched its Pixel 6 with its chipset which google calls the tensor.
Some may think is it better than the Qualcomm 888 and A15. What’s new with this chip or what are the changes this has in comparison to 888 or A15?
Here’s everything you should know about the Google Tensor chip-
Google has partnered with Samsung to build its 5 nm-based tensors like we are expecting from the leaks earlier. This is the first time Google has introduced its custom-made chips for its pixel lineup. But the question is why is Google making its chip. As all of us know Google has always focused on their artificial intelligence and the main thing for their cameras is the processing.
That is why by using old 12 megapixels sensors in their pixel lineup they can beat today’s flagship. And the main thing about the new chip is that Google wants full control over their hardware and software just as Apple.
Because the chips made by Qualcomm have a limitation in driver support for google to push updates to the smartphone because when the driver support expires on the Qualcomm chip, Google can’t push updates even if it wants. This is one of the greatest drawbacks for the android market. And to solve this issue Google came up with its SOC.
TENSOR CPU AND GPU
As of now, Google has restricted influencers’ access to the pixel’s full benchmarks and software. So based on it we can’t compare the chip with Qualcomm and Apple but we can assume with the architecture.
The Google Tensor chip is based on 5nm architecture and designed for AI-based work.
The tensor chip has an 8-core CPU where there are 2 cortex x1 cores for the high-performance tasks 2 cortex A76 cores for the mid-level works and 4 A-55 efficiency cores for efficient work.
The double x1 cores help the performance of the pixel to be on the top and keep the performance consistent. And the mid-and low performance is to save battery life.
There is quite a 20-core GPU that provides better gaming and is 370 % more powerful than the Google Pixel 5 which uses the Adreno 620 GPU. Google added its neural core engine for its machine learning tasks. And Google has gained its image signal processing.
Google presented its new generation Titan M2 chip which checks through the hardware-level security of the pixel device. Titan M2 is not a part of the tensor chip but it helps through several tasks done on the pixel device and keeps it safe from malware.
Like the Titan M1 chip which verifies the lock screen of lock screen password of the mobile then keeps safe the mobile downgrade to the lower level of Android version which is vulnerable to malware and viruses.
TPU, CONTEXT HUB, ISP
The tensor processing unit which is designed by the Google research team helps in the machine learning tasks of the pixel devices.
With the new improved image signal processing, Google is using an algorithm called HDRnet which helps the pixel devices to take live HDR videos at 4K 60fps very efficiently.
Therefore the new pixel 6 can take HDR videos like it was taking in photos and it helps to process every frame of that video and make it look alive.
Context hub takes the machine learning to a low-power mode where the features like an always-on display, now playing and several other features to use low power and can run all the time without hitting the battery.
As a result by dividing each and every part of the SOC Google’s tensor chip can handle smoothly and without affecting the processor and overheating.
WHAT TENSOR IS CAPABLE OF?
Tensor chip is capable of everything a flagship can do because of the 5nm architecture, and powerful cores but with Google’s artificial intelligence Google presented several features like motion mode, action pan, face fix features.
Motion mode helps to take a photo and keeps the subject in line and gives an effect to the background of your wish to look like it’s in motion.
The action plan helps to enhance the blur effect in a photograph and keeps the subject sharp.
As a result, Google has implemented an advanced voice recognition algorithm to improve the experience of live captioning and speech-to-text functionalities.
And there is also an additional feature of assistant voice typing for editing what you just transcribed in an entirely hands-free manner and Live Translate, with the Pixel’s translation quality improving by 18%.
WILL THERE BE NEXT GENERATIONS?
Surely Google has developed a specific quantity of Tensor chips. Google has also promised 5 years of security updates for its Pixel 6 series, which is a pretty big jump in the android world.
And by looking at the part of the Titan M2 chip, Google is surely going to build its different segments of SOC for its pixel devices. This is beneficial for the consumers because the control google gets in the hardware part will lead to strong software support for android devices. And we could presume to see an ecosystem and strong software on the android side which was one of the biggest drawbacks of android phones to date.
Hence it will be worth watching how Google’s step towards this direction will be beneficial for android users around the globe.
