Cyclone Jawad was showing its effect on the coast of Odisha with heavy showers and very high-speed winds as it is moving towards the coast and according to the reports of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) it was expected to receive heavy rainfall in several parts of coasts of West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.

It is expected that the cyclone Jawad will make its landfall somewhere near Puri by noon on Sunday and is predicted to weaken and move in a northward direction by the next twelve hours along with coasts in Odisha near Puri as a Deep Depression around December 5.

To tackle the situation, Rajiv Gauba, the Cabinet Secretary has been looking into the preparations that are being done to overcome the situation created by the cyclone Jawaad originated in the Bay of Bengal and has also instructed to ensure no life loss and minimum property damage.

Total 64 teams are deployed in the affected states by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). In 19 districts of Odisha, the schools will remain closed due to heavy rainfall and safety reasons, meanwhile, around fifty-five thousand people have been evacuated from the districts of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, and Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh. 

Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that most of the places will experience light to moderate rainfall and extremely heavy rainfall along with the coast of Odisha and very heavy rainfall over the northern coastal region in Andhra Pradesh, some areas of Odisha and coastal regions of West Bengal on December 4, whereas on December 5, very heavy rainfall was predicted in the coastal lines of West Bengal and some areas of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam and by December 6 the rainfall will be light and moderate in these places.

As the cyclone, Jawad is moving towards the northward direction from the Bay of Bengal with a speed of 6 km/hour for the last six hours.

When it comes to safety, evacuation efforts have been taken in Puri and as per Samarth Verma, District Magistrate Puri, the places which are at high risk and have high chances to face vulnerable risk are being evacuated and post-cyclone supply supplies like electricity, water, and necessity are also ready and meals are already being provided to the ones who are now in the cyclone shelters.

The cyclone is now centered 400 km south of Puri, 230 km east from Visakhapatnam, and now is moving towards the northwest direction. In some time the rainfall will increase in the areas like Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and some more areas of Andhra Pradesh, whereas West Bengal is likely to experience rainfall for today and tomorrow, and Andhra Pradesh is expected to be in clear condition.

Due to the cyclone and heavy rainfall, some exams like the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) and the University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC- NET) have been canceled that were scheduled on December 5 in the centers of West Bengal, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.

In Andhra Pradesh, a total of 10 marine police teams, 11 NDRF, 5 SDRF, and 6 coast guards have been deployed taking it as a precautionary measure. Also, a sand art event and classical dance festival were called off due to safety reasons on Friday as the cyclone is seen approaching Odisha.

Also, the International Sand Art Festival and The Konark Festival at Sun Temple were supposed to conclude on December 5 but after receiving notice from Tourism Department, they were immediately called off.

As the cyclone storm is already predicted, so to save the crops farmers have started harvesting their crops early and selling the paddy, around mid-December they are planning to harvest their paddy as the mandis will open at the end of the month.

As earlier, due to cyclone Yaas and then unseasonal rains during the pre-harvest season and now cyclone Jawad, the farmers did not even get the proper time to recover from the situation, and still, Paddy is pending to ripen but due to the circumstances they are forced to harvest them early, and they have to bear loss due to the quality of paddy.

Firstly the coronavirus and now the cyclone, the sufferings are high, and people don’t know what they are going to do, especially farms they are dependent on the agriculture and crops, if that are destroyed, their source of income will be affected more badly, still, the farmers are not in so good condition and are trying to overcome.

Apart from that, the government is trying to tackle the cyclone situation so that there is no life loss and minimum property damage in every state which are alerted.

Evacuation in the high alert areas is in process, and they will be provided the cyclone shelters, and for post-cyclone time, arrangements for the necessities like water supply, power supply, food supply are made so that people can overcome the condition more easily. Cyclone Jawad is the third cyclone after Yaas and Gulaab in the year 2021.
