Winner of the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke awards, Lata Mangeshkar has been an icon of Indian cinema, singing in an extensive list of Hindi films. She also sang in several local languages, including Marathi and Bengali.

A member of a famous musical family, Mangeshkar also composed music and directed several films. Known as the “Indian Nightingale”, she was famous for her voice.

 Born in 1929, Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest of five children, including singer Asha Bhonsle, who visited Mangeshkar at the hospital after being transferred to the ICU. Their father was classical musician Pandit Dinanat Mangeshkar, who gave the young Lata Mangeshkar his first music lessons.

When her father died in 1942, 13-year-old Lata Mangeshkar began her musical career combining singing and acting roles in Marathi films. In 1945, Mrs Mangeshkar had an early hit with the song Aayega Aanewala in the movie Mahal starring Madhubala. 

Thereafter, Lata Mangeshkar’s career and voice reached unprecedented heights. A filmfare award winner for Best Female Playback Singer, she sang raga-based compositions by Naushad in Baiju Bawra, Mother India, and MughalEAzam; she sang Shankar Jaikishan’s melodious tracks in Barsaat and Shree 420; the lilting tracks of Salil Chowdhury’s Madhumati won her another, along with three others for Bees Saal Baad, Khandan, and Jeen.

For the films Parichay, Kora Kagaz, and Lekin, Lata Mangeshkar won three National Award nominations for Best Female Playback Singer. In addition to Pakeezah, Abhimaan, Amar Prem, Aandhi, Silsila, Chandni, Sagar, Rudali and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, she has also appeared in many notable films.

On Republic Day in 1963, Lata Mangeshkar performed “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo” at the National Stadium in New Delhi to commemorate Indian soldiers who died during the 1962 war with China.

During a meeting with President S Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, singer Lata Mangeshkar performed the song live at the podium. Sadhi Manase’s 1965 Maharashtra State Government Award for Best Music Director was awarded to Lata Mangeshkar, who composed the music for many Marathi films. Additionally, she made several films, among them Lekin in the 1990s, in which she also sang. 

Lata Mangeshkar, a legendary singer, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday morning. Known as “Queen of Melody” or “Indian Nightingale,” Mangeshkar tested positive for Covid-19 on January 8 with mild symptoms and was being treated at Breach Candy Hospital. She was 92 years old. Mangeshkar was admitted to the intensive care unit at Breach Candy Hospital and was treated by Dr Prathit Samdani and his team of doctors. 

By last week, the legendary singer’s condition was improving, but her health deteriorated and she was put on a ventilator again on Saturday morning. The singer was also treated for pneumonia. She recovered from COVID-19 and pneumonia on January 30th.

On Saturday, several dignitaries visited the hospital to see the singer, including Labor Minister Piyush Goyal, Maharashtra’s Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray, film producer Madhur Bhandarkar and PNK leader Supriya Sule. In November 2019, Mangeshkar complained of shortness of breath and was diagnosed with pneumonia and was admitted to the same hospital. discharged after 28 days.  

Born in Indore, Mangeshkar has been the voice of screen idols for generations. As a singer, she has performed more than 30,000 songs in more than 30,000 languages over the course of her 70-year career. Her first groundbreaking song, Dil Mera Toda, was written for the 1948 film Majboor.

In “Tune O Rangeele”, “Aye Mere Wattan Ke Logo”, “Maye Ni Maye”, “Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye”, “Tere Liye”, and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”, she has also produced these five different songs. “Her Last Regular” is an album made in memory of Yash Chopra, who made the film “Veer Zaara” in 2004. The last song Mangeshkar recorded was “Saugandh Mujhe”.

She was awarded the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001. Lata Mangeshkar has also won several awards, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke Award and several National Film Awards.

President Ram Nath Kovind described Lata’s death as heartbreaking and added that her contributions will remain unmatched. “I am saddened by the death of Lataji, as are millions of people around the world. Generations have expressed their deepest feelings in her extensive songs that capture the essence and beauty of India. The achievements of Bharat Ratna, Lataji will remain incomparable,” the tweet read.

In Lata Mangeshkar’s death a national funeral will be held 

 Lata Mangeshkar’s remains will be placed in Shivaji Park at 2:30 pm today for public darshan, and in the evening this legendary singer will be held at a national funeral.
