At least 46 migrants were found dead on Monday in and around a semi-trailer truck that had been abandoned on the side of a road in San Antonio,  central Texas, officials said. 

The horrifying discovery was one of the worst disasters involving immigrants in the United States in recent years, five years after a similar fatal incident in the same city just hours from the Mexican border. 

Charles Hood, fire chief in San Antonio, told reporters: “We have processed about 46 bodies that have been seen, tagged, and declared dead as of now.”

 He said 16 were alive and consciously taken to the hospital-12 as adults and 4 pediatric patients.  “The patient we saw was a refrigerated semi-trailer truck that was suffering from heat exhaustion, no evidence of water in the car, but this rig had no visible air conditioning,” Hood said.
